Academics
Learning Center
The mission of our education department is to reinforce and enhance the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the hours they spend at the Club. We strive to foster academic success and life-long learning. Programs enable youth to develop positive feelings, attitudes, and behaviors about school and learning; encourage creativity; develop aspirations for the future; and apply learning to everyday situations. These goals are accomplished in many ways. We have a library full of fiction and nonfiction books and reference materials, a computer lab, homework help and tutoring, various skill building and critical thinking activities, hands-on stations and games, a variety of special interest clubs and classes offered throughout the year, incentives for positive academic participation, and much more!
Power Hour: Making Minutes Count
Power Hour is a protected time period offered Mondays through Thursdays dedicated to high-yield activities, the daily habit of homework completion, improving academic success, and fostering positive attitudes related to education. Club members can partake in a variety of Club-wide integrated activities and games, receive one-on-one homework assistance, get lost in a book, strengthen skills at a learning station, or much more! One power point can be earned for every twenty minutes of participation and may be exchanged for various prizes and parties throughout the year.
Computer Lab
Computer time is very popular with Club members! Our computer lab was opened in part through grants from the Packard Foundation. We have fourteen computers with full multimedia capabilities available for children to do research, type papers, visit educational and enjoyable websites, and much more!
Kid’s College, a computer program that differentiates math, literacy, and science instruction has been implemented as well. This program helps each child where he or she needs it, in each step of the way. The unique program combines Adaptive Technology with state standards-aligned curriculum and interactive sports video games to deliver effective, targeted, and engaging instruction. Our kids love the games and competition.
